Peanut Butter and Chocolate

How Personality Powers Performance

Peanut Butter and Chocolate: How Personality Powers Performance

When Rob Toomey and Bruce Griffiths first met, their conversation led to talk about consulting and they soon discovered overlapping, complementary passions — what Rob called the “peanut butter and chocolate” of individual identity at work: the blend of personality type and competency

Bruce has spent half a century developing competency models that describe exemplary professionals, managers, and leaders in organizational contexts, while at TypeCoach, Rob and Carly Toomey have built a dynamic platform that reveals personality profiles for individuals and teams. Both Rob and Bruce instantly recognized that this powerful combination could provide a diagnosis for use in personal and professional development.

This webinar will describe two approaches – who you are (Rob and TypeCoach) and how you show up at work (Bruce and competencies). We’ll explore the headwinds and tailwinds that personality produces to influence performance. Participants will do a deep dive into two important competencies – Problem Solving & Decision Making and Organizing & Planning (time management) – to understand how the crosswinds of personality can help or hinder, and how competency models can translate personality into organizational performance.

When Bruce Griffiths founded Organization Systems International (OSI) in 1980, he had a unique vision of satisfying client needs through collaborating with a network of experts. He recognized that collaboration with others created a synergy more powerful than any individual alone could provide. Several decades later, that network has expanded worldwide, and Bruce continues to grow and maintain the diversity and geographic distribution of this network. Bruce is an organizational consultant and the founder of OSI, featuring the Polaris® universal competency model, with over 40 years of experience in leadership and consulting roles. After graduating from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1969, Bruce served for five years as an officer in both the United States Coast Guard and Navy. His interest in leadership was sparked during duty in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam conflict. After transitioning to reserve officer status, he obtained his M.S. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from San Diego State University. He then joined a large multinational conglomerate, The Wickes Companies, where he led the Human Resources Planning Group. He left Wickes in 1980 to form OSI. Bruce retired from the US Coast Guard Reserve as a Captain in 1993. Bruce has specialized in leadership selection and development and has been recognized a number of times for professional contributions, including two best practice citations from ASTD for developing unique business simulations designed to teach strategic leadership competencies.

As President and Co-Founder of TypeCoach, Rob is responsible for strategic partnerships, new client outreach and engagement, new product development, and managing the strategic direction of TypeCoach. Since our founding in 2004, Rob has delivered live programs to more than 60,000 participants primarily within the world’s leading organizations. An avid traveler and open-minded learner, Rob particularly enjoys the interplay between personality type and culture. In 2015, TypeCoach began offering a suite of online tools that have allowed the organization to reach a dramatically wider range of people – more than 200,000 participants have been through these tools and related training since. Rob was previously a corporate attorney in Boston for five years. He received a B.A. from Trinity College in Hartford, CT and holds a J.D. from Boston University School of Law.
